11 Oct – Yesterday saw the conclusion of the club’s Mixed Singles championship. As expected the first round of the day was a titanic battle between the titans, Ann Halls got out to a big lead 11-0 in her game with Sharron MacKinnon. However MacKinnon came on after the dew disappeared off the quick morning green and at 19-19 MacKinnon got a single shot on the next two ends to win 21-19. In the other interesting matchup the brute force and ignorance of the male Ralph Ballinger was too much for delicate sensible Linda Swanson. Swanson was consistently under pressure from Ballingers relentless drawing to the head, going down 21-5. Bob Langford had a poor nights sleep and it showed in his performance getting soundly beaten by Dave Smith 21-3. Chris Newson accounted for first year bowler Jake Herbert 21-9 but credit should be given to Herbert for even making the quarter finals, a splendid achievement.
In the semi final Mackinnon had no answer to Smiths consistent bowling and was disappointed in her performance. She had played so well both days but all it takes is one bad game to be out. The other semi final was all one way traffic Ballinger winning 21-1.
Qualifying for the final Smith had big wins 21-3 and 21-4 along with Ballinger’s 21-5 and 21-1. The final was expected to be a tight game however Ballinger put Smith under pressure with nice draw bowls and up shots, running away with the game 21-8. The score was no a true indication on Smith’s performance and was a bit flattering for Ballinger. In two weeks time the club has its next championship, the drawn A/C Fours. The match committee is asking the top men bowlers to support this event as so far this season they have yet to show themselves.
6 Oct – We have the battle of the titans this Saturday. Ann Halls has draw Sharron MacKinnon in the quarter finals for the Mixed Singles. This game is a must see and excitement amongst club members for this epic clash. Another potential exciting game is Linda Swanson and Ralph Ballinger the top and 4th qualifier. It’ll be an interesting psychological matchup, will the calm head of a lady succeed over the aggression of a man, we shall see.
The other two quarter finals will have their own intrigues, first year bowler Jake Herbert again clashes with Chris Newson, with Newson getting the better of Herbert in a tight match in section play. Reliable Bob Langford takes on hot and cold Dave Smith, another game like all others is in the balance.
Cannot get to the club on Saturday, then keep an eye on the results during the day, they will be posted soon after games finish. https://onerahi.bowls.nz/latest/
Quarter finals starts at 8:30 on Saturday weather permitting so come along for this high octane matchups.

21 Sept – On a difficult windy finals day the A/C Drawn Club Championship Triples was finalised. Skip Linda Swanson with Rose Tantau and Lead Peter Noone eked out a win by 1 point beating the highly fancied team of Ann Halls, Amy Little and Danny Ilievski. Last season Ann Halls won every womens club championship a historic achievement. Going into the final end and trailing Halls by 2 points both Noone and Tantau was holding two shots, one each however they were not close to the jack. Up stepped their skip Swanson who draw two close shots with her two bowls. Talented Ann Halls managed to take out one of the bowls with a run shot but after a tight measure Swanson got the three points for the win. Score 12-11

First Club Championship
14 Sept – We had our first for the season club championship, the Drawn A/C Pairs. We were fortune enough to get four of our associate members to enter. Four qualifying games were played on Saturday with the top four out of the 12 teams progressing to the Semi Finals on Sunday. The windy conditions made it tricky for the teams. Sunday again was windy however some very good bowling from all the bowlers. Ian Bowick and Bruce Horscroft the top qualifiers played fourth qualifier Bob Langford and Rangi Timoti. Bowick started well and although Langford was closing the gap they just fell short in the 14 end game. It was a different story in the second semi final, Jo Hood and Steve Rodokal the second top qualifier gave a good old fashion hiding to Winston Kaka and Chris Newman. In the final Bowick again was quick out of the blocks and if it wasn’t for Steve Rodokal who stopped them from some big scoring heads with his last bowl the lead would have probably been to great for a comeback. When Bowick’s lead started to struggle with weight and Rodokal came on the tide slowly turned. Bowick lost the lead with 3 ends to play and over the last few ends Hood cemented a win by three points. The club congratulates Jo Hood and Steve Rodokal for their win in trying conditions, they were along with Ian Bowick and Bruce Horscroft were the most consistent teams in the competition. Thanks to our sponsor Onerahi New World for their food voucher prizes. They were our first tournament of the summer season which saw a full field with some top quality teams. It was a successful day for the club with several positive comments about the organisation, afternoon tea and six prizes. There were three four winners, Bill Dykzeul from Ngunguru taking top honours with Paul Morris from Arapohue finishing second, just in front of our club team of Ann Halls.
